Rusinga Island - Masai Mara

DAY 1 Rusinga Island Lodge, Lake Victoria

On arrival in Nairobi you will be met and collected from Jomo Kenyatta Airport or from your Nairobi hotel to catch the 7.45am flight to Kisumu. On arrival at 8.30am you will be met by your charter plane for a short 15minute flight to Rusinga Island Lodge for your first overnight stay. Relax, unwind and soak away the rigors of long-distance travelling.

DAY 2 Rusinga Island Lodge

This 8 bedroomed lodge is set in a veritable oasis of huge fig trees and lush green lawns tapering down to the lake shore. Bird life is prolific with nesting fish eagles overhead and a myriad of colorful water birds in abundance. Guests may choose to relax in the Spa massage/beauty treatment centre under the supervision of a professional therapist, swim in the pool or take part in more active water sports such as waterskiing and fishing before enjoying a four course dinner by candlelight, on the jetty if they so wish.

DAY 3 Rusinga Island Lodge

The day can unfold with an early morning walk to the nearby archaeological sites where prehistoric Pro-Consul hominid remains were discovered. After a hearty breakfast at the edge of the lake guests may wish to seek the challenge of fishing for giant Nile Perch on the fully equipped boats. Following an afternoon siesta or Spa treatments guests can enjoy sundowners out at the nearby Bird Islands as the sun sets directly over the world’s second largest, freshwater lake.

DAY 4 Serian Luxury Tented Camp, Masai Mara

After breakfast, a short 25 minute charter flight whisks you from Rusinga to the vast savannahs of the world famous Masai Mara. This is part of the Serengeti ecosystem and is famous for its migratory herds of wildebeest, large concentrations of predators, elephants and diversity of large mammal species. There you will be met at the airstrip mid morning and after an inaugural game drive, arrive at Serian Luxury Tented Camp for lunch. Run by one of Africa’s most professional guides and naturalists -Alex Walker-this camp combines both the traditional safari with uncompromised luxury. Eight spacious tents with ensuite bathrooms, hot/cold running water and cedar decks overlook the swirling Mara River immediately below camp.

DAY 5 Serian Luxury Tented Camp

Awoken gently at dawn with piping hot tea, coffee or hot chocolate guests can take a game drive in search of the Mara’s fabulous animals. Lion prides finishing their previous nights feast or furtive ‘hard to find’ Leopards can be seen very close to camp.

A picnic lunch may often be taken out, allowing guests to spend a full day in the bush before returning back to this luxurious camp for well earned sundowners on the verandah. Dinner by candlelight is taken in the stylish designed dining room featuring a natural stone fire place, elegantly placed sofas and chairs under a permanent thatched roof.

Hand carved baths made from local stone with running hot/cold water allow guests to soak away the day’s dust in privacy yet within view of the river itself below.

DAY 6 Serian Tented Camp

Another early morning start may begin with a walk escorted by an armed guide. There one can appreciate the ‘Little Five’ and notice all the unique savannah flora and fauna at close quarters. Guests may find time to seek out the local Masai customs and traditions which highlight their age old, nomadic, pastoral existence.

Breakfast is often taken in the bush away from camp and late morning allows one to explore the riverbanks for Hippos, Crocodiles and resting large cats shading themselves from the midday sun. Taking an afternoon siesta may be in order followed by an evening game drive exploring another less visited corner of this expansive wilderness.

DAY 7 Departure

Guests will have the whole day in the Mara to seek out specialities and observe many species in their ‘battle for survival’ before catching the scheduled 1600hrs flight back to Nairobi. Guests will be transferred on arrival at Wilson Airport to their Nairobi hotel or to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for their onward departure.
